Add Sparkle to Your Home Décor with a Brooch Wreath

Bring lots of bling to your décor with a sparkling brooch wreath! It’s beautiful for the holidays, but pretty enough to hang year round.

Brooch Wreath

Brooch wreaths are a beautiful way to bring extra sparkle to your holiday décor. The glitz of rhinestones and pearls is positively dressy, and using colors that are not traditionally associated with Christmas make them highly versatile.

Buy brooches or curate from your own collection.

An extensive selection of inexpensive brooch kits (used to make brooch bouquets) are available online. You can purchase a quantity of 25 for about $18 (right here). But you could also incorporate brooches from your own personal collection, or perhaps even round out the look with buttons and earrings.

Materials

You will need a styrofoam wreath form as a base for this project. The foundation of the luxurious look begins with at least half a yard of crushed velvet or velour. This heavier material looks sumptuous, but has a sturdier hold for pinning brooches to it. Also, plenty of satin ribbon to make a big, fancy bow for extra embellishment is a must.

To begin, cut a length of the fabric at least 7″ wide. Fold each side inward to create a 3″ wide piece. If you cover a 12-inch wreath form, you’ll need about 108 inches length, total. This will conceal any raw edges of the fabric, and form a kind of wide ribbon to wrap around the wreath.

Press the inward folded sides with an iron on a medium-high setting to hold them in place.

Start to wrap the wreath by attaching the end of a strip of fabric to the back of the styrofoam form. Hold it in place with two or three pearl head fabric pins.

Continue to wrap the fabric over the wreath form, making sure to overlap the fabric so that the foam underneath doesn’t show.

End and begin again.

When you reach the end of the fabric, fold it under and pin it to the form. Pin the end of the next piece of fabric at the same location and continue to wrap.

Brooch Wreath

When all the wreath form is covered, cut away excess fabric, leaving about 4″ of it for the end.

Finish by folding the end of the piece of fabric under and pin into place.

Brooch Wreath

Make a large, multi-layered bow with the satin ribbon. Attach it to the front top of the wreath. Sew it onto the fabric, or tack it on with hot glue.

Brooch Wreath

Pin brooches and embellishments onto the fabric. Lay them on the front of the wreath first, to decide on the placement of each piece before attaching them. If you are using buttons, earrings or other elements that don’t pin, you can tack them down with hot glue.

Sew a ribbon loop to the back of the wreath for hanging.

Brooch Wreath

Add a large pin or decorative flourish to the center of the bow. This can also be sewn or glued into place.

These brooch wreaths are easy to put together, and aren’t very time consuming to make. You can make additional ones to hang in a grouping, and they make an extravagant statement when paired with glittery winter decor. They have an unusual visual impact and lend a touch of vintage glamour to your room!
